Things to Do
A Day Off Can Stay Close or Cross Dallas
A day off from Westwood Park can mean Kiest Park, the public library or a trip farther into Dallas. The Dallas Zoo and Bishop Arts District sit between the close stops and central city destinations. Klyde Warren Park and the Dallas Farmers Market take the longest drives on this list.
The difference matters when the outing is short. Kiest Park takes 4 min off peak, while Klyde Warren Park takes 16 min. Admission, parking and operating hours should be checked with each destination before leaving. All drive times shown here are free flow, off peak estimates.

How a Day Off Actually Goes
Summer
- Trail at Opening Cedar Ridge Preserve opens at 6:30 in the morning and locks the gate an hour after sunset. July and August carry normal highs of 96.9 and 97.1 degrees, which is why the trail gets walked early and finished before the afternoon. Hours from Audubon Dallas, which operates the preserve. Temperatures are 1991 to 2020 normals for Dallas Love Field.
- Film Festival Weekend The Oak Cliff Film Festival runs four days out of the Texas Theatre on Jefferson Boulevard, independent programming across the theatre and venues around it. The most recent edition ran from 30 July to 2 August. From the Texas Theatre's own festival page. Confirm the current year's dates before planning around them.
- Evenings on the Lawn August is the hottest month of the year here at a normal high of 97.1 degrees. The open lawn at Klyde Warren Park is an evening proposition from June through September rather than a midday one. 1991 to 2020 normals for Dallas Love Field, the nearest long record station.
Fall
- Safari Nights The Dallas Zoo stays open until nine on Saturdays from 5 September to 3 October, with a live band at The Grove. It is included with general admission rather than ticketed separately. From the zoo's own Safari Nights page.
- Pumpkin Day Weekend The Dallas Farmers Market gives a weekend in early October to Texas Pumpkin Day, with a petting zoo, live music and roasted pumpkin seed tastings at The Shed. The most recent one ran on 4 and 5 October. From the market's own event page. This is the most recent confirmed season rather than a posted date for the coming year.
- The Cooler Window October brings the normal high down to 79.5 degrees from September's 90. Cedar Ridge Preserve's full window, 6:30 in the morning until dusk, becomes usable end to end rather than only at its edges. Temperatures are 1991 to 2020 normals for Dallas Love Field. Hours from Audubon Dallas.

From the park's own events pages, which show the series running in March in each of the last two years. The week's exact dates are posted closer to the time.
- Blossoms and Berries The Dallas Farmers Market gives a weekend in late April to a plant and flower festival, with vendors selling houseplants, cut blooms and herb and berry starters. The most recent one ran on the Saturday and Sunday of the last full weekend of the month. From the market's own write up of the festival.
- The Mildest Stretch March, April and May carry normal highs of 69.9, 77.4 and 84.9 degrees, the most comfortable run of the year. It is the stretch when the lawn at Klyde Warren Park and the trails at Cedar Ridge both work at midday. 1991 to 2020 normals for Dallas Love Field.
Questions People Ask
What is there to do in Oak Cliff?
Most of it sits on or near Jefferson Boulevard. The Texas Theatre has been showing films since the 1930s and also hosts concerts. The Oak Cliff Cultural Center next door is a free city gallery of work by local artists. Bishop Arts is a few blocks of independent restaurants, bars, coffee shops and boutiques. Closer to this address, Kiest Park is the largest city park in Oak Cliff. The Dallas Zoo and downtown are both short drives.
What is there to do near southwest Dallas for free?
More than most people expect. The Oak Cliff Cultural Center charges nothing to walk in, although some of its classes and events do carry a fee. Every city park on these pages is free, including Kiest Park and its loop trail. The Polk-Wisdom Branch Library runs Dallas Public Library programs at no charge. Cedar Ridge Preserve has hiking trails and is the longest drive of the group.
Is the Texas Theatre still open?
Yes. The single screen cinema on Jefferson Boulevard opened in 1931 and still operates. It programs independent and repertory films, hosts concerts and events, and has a bar. It does not open every day of the week, so check its own schedule before going.
Is Bishop Arts worth the drive from southwest Dallas?
It depends what you want from the evening. Bishop Arts is compact, and once you have parked, the restaurants, bars and shops are within a few blocks on foot. That makes it the easiest place nearby to turn dinner into a longer evening. Parking is the trade, and weekend evenings are the busiest. Wynnewood Village and the Jefferson Boulevard corridor are closer if the trip is an errand rather than an evening.
How far is the Dallas Zoo from Oak Cliff?
The zoo is 6.9 mi from this address, about 15 min off peak. It sits between here and downtown, so it works as a planned outing rather than a stop on the way to something else. Klyde Warren Park downtown is a little farther at 9.7 mi.
